What The Job Of Hospitality Chef Entails, And How To Train To Become One

A hospitality chef prepares meals in a variety of situations, from the ubiquitous restaurant to the ships and submarines of the Navy, and just about anything in between. All human beings, whatever their profession or working environment, still need to eat, so there will often be a need to employ a specialist hospitality chef to serve the needs of a group isolated from regular life. If you are trained as a chef, there is really no limit to the different working environments you can enjoy, even though the kitchens within those environments will be comfortably familiar.

Breaking into the career of hospitality chef is not easy, but it can be done with enough determination and effort. There are some factors you will need to consider before you finally commit to trying for a chef's career. Although there are very few people who can't become chefs if they try hard enough, there are some who would not be able to cope with the physical demands of the workload. Chefs work very long hours, and there is a lot of lifting and other physical hard work. You will not need to be an Olympic athlete to be a chef, but you will need to be fit.

Although you don't need to decide at the start exactly which type of cuisine you will specialize in, you should give some thought to areas you can practice in your own kitchen. Start by getting some experience in your own comfortable environment, where you can make errors and learn from them without the consequences being serious. The experience you can gain in your own kitchen can also help you decide which of the courses to choose at your local cooking school.

Some kind of formal training will be necessary to get a job as a hospitality chef, and there are many possibilities. Cooking schools are among the most forward thinking of educational establishments, and they fully understand that there are many people who need to be able to study in their spare time hours, and fit it in around their other work commitments. There are even possibilities for getting a job in a catering establishment while you undertake your training, so choose carefully.

Hospitality chefs will need to develop a variety of experience, as they will have to prepare many different types of dish depending on the environment and the type of people you are catering for. If you are seriously ambitious and have the basic training under your belt, it worth thinking about trying out several different types of position on a short term basis. The more varied experience you can put on your resume, the more you will stand out to potential employers in the future. This experience may also reveal to you the type of place where you will be happiest spending the rest of your career. At this point, you can begin to specialize, and develop a high degree of competence as one specific type of hospitality chef.
