Why A Pastry Chef Career Can Be Very Demanding, But Also Exceptionally Rewarding
A pastry chef career is a very demanding one, but it can also be highly rewarding. If you are wondering whether or not it would be right for you, there are a few factors to consider. Firstly, you would have to be a person who can cope with endless early mornings. A start as early as 3 or 4am is not unusual for a pastry chef. There is also the matter of the heavy lifting which inevitably comes as part of the job. Some of the pots which are used can be quite weighty when full. Even the physical act of kneading the dough demands a degree of physical endurance when performed for extended periods of time.
If you can handle the early mornings and the physical demands, then there is much to be said for a catering career. It is an industry which will stand the test of time, and will not be obsoleted by technology. No matter how many advances are made, people will still need to eat, and they will always have the desire to eat out and socialize. Catering is also a very large industry, and it has a high turn around of staff. There are always jobs which you can apply for, even in the depths of an economic downturn.
Pastry chef careers do demand a certain level of training before you can qualify for a job. A kitchen is not an environment where you can just send in untrained people and have them learn on the job. If you want to move into catering, you will need to enrol at a cookery school. There are many options available, and you will not have to give up work to train for a catering career. It is best to take it one step at a time, and concentrate on training for the basic job of chef before taking on a more advanced course dealing with the administrative aspects.
To be a great pastry chef, you should spend a lot of time in your own kitchen doing your own learning and experimenting. In fact, if you have no experience of pastry cooking, it will be better to start there. Don't be tempted to rush in to a cooking class until you have developed enough understanding to know what you are looking for. This is, in many ways, the most important stage of your entire career, as the qualification you gain here will be your major weapon in applying for jobs.
Your pastry chef career can take off from there if you get this bit right. Use the qualification and experience you have gained to get an initial job as a pastry chef. Keep experimenting at home, and also think about going back to class and expanding your skills from there. Getting an administrative qualification on top of your cooking diploma can only increase your chances of moving on to a job as a sous chef, and then possible the executive chef's job in time. There is no reason why you cannot aim for the top in your pastry chef career.
